Abstract
Weld spots 8 attaching a rim 1 to the disc 6 of a wheel are strengthened by the application of pressure to the spots which relieves residual tensile stress resulting from cooling the fused metal. The pressure may be applied to cold or heated metal by punches 15, Fig. 3, or rollers, Fig. 4 (not shown), which have a permanent imprint in at least one of the parts. A single imprint may cover one, two or more spots, and the rollers may impress a continuous imprint around the circumference of the work. A punch may be used which impresses a triangular or circular recess (13), Fig. 2 (not shown), about a weld spot (8).
