Identification labels are attached to steel or cast-iron articles, e.g. hot-rolled material, by resistance spot-welding. The label 3 is held, e.g., electro - magnetically or mechanically, across electrodes 4 immovably mounted in a welding-head 1. When the welding-head 1 with the label 3 is applied to the article a combined source of spot-welding current and superimposed high-frequency arc-welding current is directed to the electrodes 4 in succession.
