Abstract
1,266,643. Railway coupler shank. AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc. 16 July, 1970 [20 Aug., 1969], No. 34590/70. Heading B7T. In a railway coupler, a shank 14 includes spaced side walls 30 and 32 and spaced top and bottom walls 26 and 28 which are connected, along with the side walls, to a forward wall 34, the top and bottom walls increasing in thickness and converging towards said forward wall 34 and extending beyond it to define a key slot 16. The rearward corners 48 of slot 16 are chamfered and a lightener indentation 46 is provided in butt 18. Indentations 42 and 44 are situated above and below the key slot 16. A further indentation (52) may be provided beneath bottom wall 28 and in this embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) a wear plate (54) is located below (52). The forward surface 36 of forward wall 34 may consist of portions of different radii R 1 and R 2 as shown in Fig. 2 merging smoothly into the surfaces 38 and 40. Alternatively, radius R 1 may be such that these surfaces are tangential to it. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown), the upper and lower surfaces converge directly into radial forward surface 36 generated by R 1 .
