Abstract

[Also in Division C7] The surfaces of optical components are corrected by first determining the topography of the surface under consideration using an interferometer 12-17, and then sputtering a transparent material on to the desired portions of the surface from a target 25 on to which an ion beam 30 is directed, the operation being effected in a vacuum and both the interferometer and target being located in the same evacuated housing. A series of adjustable masks 26 are movable over the optical component surface to ensure the correct thickness of deposition at the desired places. The target is made of transparent material, e.g. quartz. The ion beam is for example of argon, krypton or xenon.
