Abstract
1,265,803. Wet separating. AVIATION SUPPLY, MINISTER OF. 7 Aug., 1969 [7 May, 1968], No. 21473/68. Heading B2H. [Also in Divisions Dl and D2] Fibres e.g. of asbestos, are classified for length by feeding a liquid dispersion of the fibres onto a circulating endless screen having a mesh size such that longer fibres are retained thereon as a thin layer and the major part of the fibres and liquid are passed through the screen by centrifugal force for collection and perhaps recirculation and further classification. The retained fibres are removed from the screen by a jet of gas directed thereon at a subsequent part of its travel. The' screen may be formed by a horizontal rotating cylinder, the dispersion being fed tangentially by a supply weir onto the inside of the cylinder at its lower part and the fibres removed by an air jet directed from outside the upper part of the cylinder for collection by suction into a chamber through an elongated orifice extending over the full width of the screen. The liquid may be partly supplied at a washing position between dispersion supply and fibre removing stations. Modifications include a screen divided into two or more sections perhaps of different mesh sizes and recirculating systems for successive and/or graded classification of fibres. The length classification may be preceded by a diameter classification using a hydrocyclone or an elutriation column.
