Abstract

1,265,580. Phosphoric acid; calcium sulphate agglomerates. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 23 May, 1969 [10 July, 1968], No. 26536/69. Heading C1A. Phosphoric acid is separated from a suspension of gelatinous or finely divided calcium sulphate by agitating the suspension with a surfactant which is a straight or branched chain alkyl benzene sulphonic acid or salt thereof, a straight chain alkyl sulphate or a petroleun sulphonate and with a bridging liquid comprising a petroleum or other hydrocarbon liquid until agglomerates of precipitate form. The agitation preferably comprises a horizontal reciprocating motion followed by a rolling motion of slower speed. The surfactant is preferably used in an amount of 0À1-4% wt. based on the calcium sulphate. The bridging liquid, preferably in an amount of from 10-150% vol. based on the calcium sulphate, may be naphtha, kerosene, fuel oil, gas oil or a petroleum aliphatic solvent. The suspension may be formed by reacting phosphate rock with concentrated phosphoric acid and the resultant superphosphate suspension reacted with sulphuric acid.
