Abstract

[Also in Divisions A3 and B5] A thermally insulating material comprises a layer of flexible expanded plastics material having a substantially closed pore structure and a layer of piled fibrous material secured to one surface of the layer of expanded plastics material, the combined layers having a thermal resistance value of at least 1 do and being buoyant in a liquid having a specific gravity of unity. Specified expanded plastics materials are a reactive self-crosslinking acrylic polymer and unicellular neoprene, and polypropylene fibre is specified for the fibrous material. The pile of the fibrous material may be secured to the plastics material either with an adhesive or while the plastics material is in a partly cured or hardened state, the fibrous material being deposited by an electrostatic flocking method. Alternatively, the layer of piled fibrous material may be a pile fabric, e.g. knitted, woven or needleloom fabric, which is either adhered to the plastics material or has a coating of partly cured or hardened plastics material applied to it. A thin film of plastics material, e.g. a film extruded from a blend of nylon and P.V.C., may be applied to the surface of the expanded plastics material remote from the pile layer.
