Abstract

1,264,707. Jointing by forging. GLAENZER SPICER. 24 June, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 31843/69. Heading B3H. An apparatus for jointing a grooved shaft 2 and a tube or tubular portion of a body 1 of softer material comprises a set of at least three co-operating jaws 3-5, 10-13 arranged to be moved radially in a press. In the ease of three jaws the lower pair 4, 5 are slidably mounted in a bed block with a V-channel. The upper jaw 3 is moved downwards by the ram of a hydraulic press. In the four jaw arrangement the ram is also provided with a V-channelled block 14 to move the upper jaws 10, 11 together. The flash (1b), Fig. 8 (not shown), may be eliminated by rotating the shaft and performing a second pressing or by flattening the tube in a press at three or four places prior to pressing, Fig. 9 (not shown). The grooves may be helical and extend only over part of the periphery of the shaft at the joint, Fig. 13 (not shown). The end of the tube may be swaged to reduce it to the shaft diameter.
