A developed and stabilized image is formed in an imagewise exposed layer of a photographic silver halide material by treating the material with an aqueous alkaline solution containing a photographic silver halide developing agent and thiosulphate or thiocyanate silver halide stabilizing agent in the presence of an alkylene oxide compound. The material may be a photo-developable material. The developing agent may be a 3- pyrazolidone or have the formula: wherein X is 0 or an amino group, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and R is H or OH, R not being H when n is 0 (see British Patent 767, 700). The stabilizing agent is preferably an alkali metal thiocyanate. The aqueous alkaline solution preferably contains at least 70g per litre of sodium or potassium thiocyanate. The alkylene oxide preferably has the formula:- formula:- R-O(CH 2 CH 2 O) n H wherein R is H, alkyl, aryl or an aliphatic acyl group, and n is from S to 100. The aqueous alkaline solution containing the alkylene oxide compound can be applied before or after photodevelopment, but is preferably applied after the material has received a small uniform postexposure because such an exposure, whilst insufficient to make the latent image visible, intensifies the latent image and improves the final image quality (see Examples 1 and 4).
