Abstract
1,263,801. Proteinaceous coating composition. RALSTON PURINA CO. 10 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 12596/69. Heading C3H. [Also in Division C4] A process for producing a paper stock coating composition comprises hydrolysing with an alkali an aqueous solution of an oil-seed protein material; before, during or after hydrolysis reacting the aqueous solution of the protein material with a silicon, boron or metal reagent so as to impart a reduced viscosity (see below) or a heat-thickening characteristic to said composition; and subsequently adding the material to an aqueous pigment slurry. "Reduced viscosity" means that the viscosity of a composition according to the invention is less than that of an otherwise similar composition containing untreated protein. The hydrolysis need be only partial. The metal reagent may supply ions of Cu, Zn, Mg, Mn, Al, Cd, V, Ni, Zr, Sn, Mo, or Co; it may be the free metal or a solution of a salt.
