Planes, arrangement of; framework.-In aeroplanes having two or more planes, gusset plates are used to connect the struts to the ribs, spars, &c. of the planes and to the fuselage or nacelle and chassis whereby the use of some or all of the usual wire stays is obviated. The gusset plates may be embodied or enclosed in the structure of the planes, fuselage, &c., to reduce the resistance, and may be employed in the structure of the rudder, elevator, &c, Fig. 9 illustrates the application of gusset plates C' for connecting L-section struts X, K<1> to the upper and lower planes L, L' so as to be enclosed to a large extent in the structure of the planes. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 4292/12, 24872/13, 26147/13, and 7122/14.
