Abstract

1,263,134. Photographic materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. March 6, 1969 [March 11, 1968], No.11946/69. Heading G2C. A sensitive photographic material comprises a support and contained in a layer or layers thereof: (a) a selective reducing agent for silver ions (reduction occurs after exposure and the latent image formed catalyzes this reduction) which is a hydrazone of the formula:- [Insert Formula I] wherein R 1 and R 3 each are H, optionally substituted alkyl having 1-6 carbons or aryl; R 2 is aryl, aralkyl, aralkenyl or a heterocyclic radical; and R 4 is optionally substituted alkyl having 1-6 carbons, aryl or a heterocyclic radical; and (b) (i) a heat-sensitive reducible silver salt; or (ii) a metal oxide capable of forming catalytic centres for physical development on exposure to actinic radiation; or (iii) a water-soluble lightsensitive, reducible silver salt. The reducible silver salts are those silver salts that can be reduced to metallic silver by exposure to heat or electromagnetic radiation. The heatsensitive reducible silver salt (i) may be a waterinsoluble heat-sensitive silver salt of a monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acid containing 2-22 carbons and is preferably silver cinnamate, silver behenate or silver oxalate. The metal oxide (ii) is preferably aluminium or zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or antimony trioxide. The water-soluble silver salt (iii) is preferably silver nitrate, silver acetate or silver lactate. Many examples of the hydrazones are listed. The material containing (a) and (b)(i) may additionally contain a water-soluble, light-sensitive silver salt or a light-sensitive silver halide capable of forming catalytic centres for physical development on exposure to actinic light. A visible metallic silver image can be produced by overall treatment with either heat or light. The material containing (a) and (b)(ii) may additionally contain a reducible silver salt capable of providing a source of silver ions for physical development, which salt may be a heat-sensitive, water-insoluble silver saltof a monocarboxylic a dicarboxylic acid containing 2-22 carbons or a water-soluble silver salt. Print-out silver images may be obtained (see Examples 2, 4 and 6)
