Abstract
1,262,839. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 13 Jan., 1971 [27 Jan., 1970], No. 1722/71. Heading G6C. A fuel assembly end connector comprises a tube 1 joined at an enlarged upper portion 6 to a casing (not shown) containing the fuel material and having at its lower end apertures 4 for the admission of coolant, e.g. liquid metal. An axial rod 8 extends the length of the tube 1 and at intervals along the rod 8 filters 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d are provided, these filters each taking up a portion only of the internal cross-section of the tube 1 and being arranged in staggered relation. As shown, the filters are semicircular and take up alternately each half of the coolant flow passageway formed by the tube 1. If one of the lower filters 10c or 10d is either wholly or partly clogged by coolant impurities, the coolant by-passes the filter but is filtered as it passes through the upper filters 10a and 10b. Any risk of local clogging between adjacent fuel pins in the fuel assembly is thus removed, and a warning is also given of any increase in the quantity of impurities carried by the coolant since the coolant flow rate falls on a filter becoming clogged and an increase in the coolant outlet temperature results.
