Abstract

1,262,302. Halomethyl-substituted azo dyes. SANDOZ Ltd. 15 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968 (2); 17 April, 1968 (2)], No. 43714/71. Divided out of 1,262,301. Heading C4P. Novel monoazo dyes of formula wherein X is the radical of a coupling component of the amino- or hydroxy-benzene, amino- or hydroxy-naphthalene or heterocyclic series or a component containing a reactive methylene group, n is 1-4, Hal is a halogen atom and rings B and D may be further substituted are prepared by treating the corresponding monoazo dyes with n moles of a halomethylating agent. In the examples a mixture of H 2 SO 4 , Cl.SO 3 H and paraformaldehyde is used. The use of the dyes as intermediates in the preparation of basic dyes is described and claimed in Specification 1,262,301.
