Abstract

1,261,712. Separating hydrocarbons. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 11 Feb., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968 (2)], Nos. 8174/68 and 8176/68. Heading C5E. [Also in Division C1] Aromatic hydrocarbons and long chain normal paraffin hydrocarbons having at least 4 carbon atoms per molecule are separated from mixtures with other hydrocarbons by contacting the mixture with a graphitic carbon which is substantially non-hydrophilic and has a surface area measured by nitrogen adsorption of at least 170 sq. metres/gm. and a ratio of heat of adsorption of n-dotriacontane from n-heptane to the heat of adsorption of n-butanol from nheptane of at least 3À5 : 1 and a heat of adsorption of n-dotriacontane from n-heptane of at least 1 calorie/gm. The adsorbed components may be subsequently recovered by desorption from the graphitic carbon, optionally in the presence of a solvent, e.g. a mixture of hydrocarbons, or an alcohol.
