1380581 Analysis of hydrocarbons BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 4 Jan 1972 [5 Jan 1971] 429/71 Heading B1H A method for the analysis of a hydrocarbon mixture consisting substantially of paraffins, naphthenes and olefins comprises subjecting a quantity of the mixture to the following steps: (i) hydrogenation under conditions such that the olefins are converted to paraffins and naphthenes and (ii) passing the hydrogenated mixture in the gas phase together with a carrier gas through a column of molecular sieve having the crystal structure of faujasite and temperature programming the column within the range 40 to 250 degrees centigrade above the average boiling point of the highest carbon number component present, the temperature programming being at such a rate that the paraffins and naphthenes are removed from the column as successive effluents and. recording the successive effluents by means of a chromatogram to give an analysis of the paraffins, naphthenes and hydrogenated olefins, and subjecting an equal quantity of the same mixture to the following steps (iii) removing' the olefins' from the mixture with an olefin adsorbent and (iv) passing the mixture of paraffins and naphthenes in the gas phase with a carrier gas through a column of molecular sieve and detecting the effluents as described in step (ii) above to give an analysis of the mixture from which the olefins have been removed. Where the mixture also contains aromatics, the first part is treated to remove them by adsorption, with subsequent disorption and estimation; the second part is treated to remove both olefins and aromatics. The adsorbent for aromatics above may be N,N'-bis (cyano-ethyl) formamide, polyethylene glycol or tetracyano-pentaerythritol; the adsorbent for aromatics and olefins together may be mercuric perchlorate.
