Abstract
1294630 Separating p-xylene IDEMITSU PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 26649/71 Heading C5E p-Xylene is separated from a hydrocarbon mixture, e.g. a thermally cracked gasoline or reformate, by passing the mixture through a type X molecular sieve of pore diameter 10- 13 Š, thereby adsorbing the p-xylene on the molecular sieve; desorbing the adsorbed pxylene with an organic desorbing agent; distilling the desorbed mixture to obtain crude p-xylene of purity 70-90 wt. per cent; and crystallizing p-xylene out. The adsorption is preferably carried out at 50-250‹ C. and under sufficient pressure to maintain the liquid phase. The desorbing agent may be toluene, a polyalkylbenzene, pentane, hexane or heptane.
