A distillation column comprises a series of horizontal vertically spaced contact trays through which extend vertical pipes 25, each pipe 25 being blanked off by a plate 31 at alternate tray levels and provided with openings 33 and 30 for liquid overflowing from one tray and discharging it onto the next lower tray respectively.
