Abstract

1,261,077. Delivering sheets. XEROX CORP. 4 Feb., 1969 [5 Feb., 1968], No. 5915/69. Heading B8R. Sheet-feeding apparatus for separating two weakly-bonded superposed sheets comprises two transport members driven to operate in different senses on opposite sides of the feed path and thus separate the sheets, one of the transport members being biased away from the feed path until the presence of sheets is sensed, whereupon the transport member is moved into contact with the sheets. Fig. 1 illustrates apparatus, not incorporating the invention, in which a manifold set 10 of sheets, comprising photoresponsive imaging material 16 between two sheets 12, 14, is fed between pairs of rollers 18, 24, 34 in a charging and imaging station. The set is then fed to further rollers 40, 42, 44 all normally rotating in the same direction at the respective nips; roller 44, however, may be reversed for a predetermined time to separate the lower sheet 14 from the top sheet 12. The sheet 12 is fed by roller 42 over guide plate 56 to rollers 59 and tray 57, while sheet 14 is guided between baffle plates 46, 48 into a second tray 54. Housings 50, 52 and 58 in plates 46, 48, 56 direct air on to the sheets, the air being circulated by a pump (not shown) through perforations 61, 62, 63 in the housings; heat sources 60 assist the drying of the sheets, and the air flow is sufficient to prevent imaged areas of the sheets from touching the guide plates or housings. In an improvement according to the invention, Fig. 2 (not shown), roller 44 rotates continuously in the reverse direction, i.e. against the feed direction of sheets from rollers 40, but is movable out of contact with the sheets by a cam mechanism connected to a photo-cell or limit switch (71) actuated by sheet 12 after separation. A further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) uses coacting belts (72), (74) to replace rollers 42, 44, belt (74) being displaceable away from belt (72) by a timed solenoid, and being provided with small fingers (80) aiding engagement of the leading edge of a sheet.
