Abstract

1,261,071 Grinding rollers. WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. '27 Jan., 1969, No. 4513/69. Addition to 1,010,591. Heading B3D. [Also in Division G3] The grinding machine control of the main Specification is modified to enable rotation of the camber generating cam through its complete working track during a half traverse of a roll to be ground, irrespective of the latter's length and to permit production of camber forms other than that for which the cam was basically cut. A movable datum member provides the datum valve and its position is adjusted by rotation of a cam to thereby adjust the datum. Control means, actuated by the traversing means controls the cam driving means to relate the cam's rotational -position to the position of the traversing means, the control means being adjustable in a manner to vary the relation between the rotational position of the cam and the position of the traversing means. The control means may comprise: (i) an information carrier, e.g. punched tape; (ii) reading means past which the information carrier is moved; and (iii) drive means for moving the information carrier past the reading means, the drive means being controlled by said traversing means so as to move in synchronism therewith; the reading means controlling the 'camdriving means in accordance with a predetermined programme carried by the information carrier. One form of grinding machine, Fig. 1 and Figs. 2-5 (not sbown) is as described in parent Specification with reference to Figs. 6-10 thereof, except that the information regarding the amount of traverse 'at any moment is fed from the position transmitter 218 to a punched tape digital control apparatus 389 which transmits signals over the line 239 to the drive motor of the apparatus 276. Andther form of grinding machine, Fig. 6 and Figs. 7-10 (not shown) is as described in parent Specification -with reference to Figs. 1-5 thereof, except that signals from the synchrotransmitter 98 mounted on the grinding machine saddle 17 drive a punched tape digital control apparatus 390 signals from which drive the synchro receiver motor 97 which rotates the cam 95 through gearing 102. 'Thus the cam 95 is rotated automatically as the grinding wheel 13 traverses the workpiece 12 in a manner depending on the programme employed on the punched tape used in the control apparatus 390 so determining the camber produced. The digital control apparatus 390 (or 389) comprises a tape reader having a step-by-step motor 391 driving a gear wheel 391 in turn driving an idler 394. The latter drives directly gears 395 rotating tape driving sprocket wheels 396. Sprockets 397 coaxial with idler 394 drive sprockets 398 through chains 399. The sprockets 398 drive, through free wheel and slipping clutches, tape spools 400. Punched paper tape passes over a support 401 having a cavity 402 covered by a window 403 and containing photo diodes, photo transistors, generating cells or similar light sensitive devices, each underlying a row of punched holes in the tape. Light from a lamp 404 is reflected downwardly by a prism 405.
