Abstract

1, 008, 882. Automatic tension control. EXPRESS PATENT CO (LIVERPOOL) Ltd. Aug. 26, 1964 [July 12, 1963], No. 27624/63. Heading G3R. In a system for automatically maintaining constant tension in a cloth layering machine, a switch, operated by change in cloth tension, controls a friction drive roller engaging the cloth. In Fig 1,a roll of cloth X is carried by a frame 14 adjustable transversely, e.g. for edge to edge alignment, on wheels 15 relative to a carriage 11 which is reciprocated on rails 13 by an electric motor (not shown) to layer the cloth Y on a table 10. During layering, the cloth is fed from roll X by a roller 26 which has a plastic or rubber surface engaging the cloth and is driven from the drive of carriage 11 through a unidirectional gearbox 35, an electromagnetic clutch 36, and a chain 33. Tension in the cloth is detected by a pivotted bar 29 which is supported by a loop in the cloth so that increase in tension above a predetermined value causes bar 29 to operate a switch 31 and thereby energize clutch 36, so that roller 26 is driven intermittently to maintain a desired tension. Roller 26 may alternatively bear directly on roll X. Specification 667,537, 667,610, and 939,276 are referred to.
