A machine for cutting predetermined lengths of cloth from a roll or cuttled package and laying the lengths in accurately superimposed relationship comprises a table 1 having cloth clamping means 2 at its outer end and rails 3 for supporting and guiding a traverse saddle or carriage 4. The latter is driven by an electric motor driving rubber-tyred wheels 5 which engage the table top. At the front of saddle 4 is a guide 6 for supporting a cutting head which can be traversed across the table. Mounted on saddle 4 so as to be capable of lateral traverse is a platform 9 which carries support means for roll of cloth 11, and side frames 12 which carry guide rollers 14, 15 and 16 and a roller 13 covered with a friction material and constantly driven at variable speed from an electromotor on platform 9, through e.g. an electro-magnetic clutch controlled by manually controlled means and adjustable according to the relative speeds of the carriage 4 and roller 13 and the nature of the material 11. In use after the material 11 has been loaded and guided to the table 1 where it is held by grippers 19 the machine is started up and the saddle 4 and platform 9 traverses to the right until they reach cloth clamping means 2. The latter is then automatically operated to grip the cloth end and the saddle is traversed in the reverse direction to lay the cloth on the table 1. When the required length of cloth has been laid the saddle 4 automatically stops and the cutter head is operated to cut off the length of cloth, The saddle is then again traversed to the right, no cloth being laid during this movement, and the process repeated. Means, such as photoelectric means, are provided to maintain the cloth edge in the required position, such means operating to adjust the position of platform 9 on the saddle 4.
