1399649 Laying fabric HERBERT KANNEGIESSER KG 20 Dec 1972 58802/72 Heading D1S A fabric laying machine comprising (a) a magazine 20 to support rotatably a number of rolls 11 of fabric and which is disposed at one end of a supporting plate 12 and has a frame 56 displaceable in a direction parallel to the end of the plate 12, (b) a carrige 15 reciprocable in the longitudinal direction of the plate 12 and which is adapted to draw off a required length of a fabric 10 from a roll 11 supported by the magazine 20, (c) a cutting device 16 reciprocable transversely to the direction of movement of the carriage 15 for severing the withdrawn fabric length, and (d) a control device 21 which ensures that the longitudinal edges of the fabric drawn by the carriage 15 off the roll 11 run straight longitudinally of the plate 12 by sensing any lateral deviation of these fabric edges and displacing the magazine 20 in a direction opposite to such movement. The carriage 15 is reciprocable manually or mechanically on rollers 29 running along guide rails 14 and is guided additionally by the longi tudinal edges of the plate 12. A number of grippers 19 are spaced adjustably across the carriage 15 and each comprises a rigid lower abutment 46 and an upper member 47 movable by a presure cylinder 48. A retaining, i.e. hold-down member 17 retains the cut fabric layers on the plate 12 and a transfer device 71 supports the leading edge of the fabric to be drawn off of one of the rolls 11. The member 17 comprises a flap 18 pivotable about an axis 42, Fig 8, and having a gripping layer 43, e.g. a rubber, plastics, leather or textile material, thereon. The leading edge 10b of the fabric to be laid is prevented from slipping back by being pressed against the layer 43 by a rod 45 mounted in grooves 44 in bearing parts 18a liftable off of the flap 18. The device 21, Fig 7, comprises a two-armed lever 51 having an arm 51a scanning the longitudinal fabric edge and an arm 51b movable between two pressure switches 52 one of which is actuated in dependance upon any lateral deviation of the fabric edge to actuate a gear motor 53, Fig 1, to displace the magazine 20 running on wheels 68. The magazine 20 comprises a frame 56 carrying two discs 57 between which therolls 11 are mounted and which are pivotable about an axis 58. In operation, a roll 11 from which the fabric sections are to cut and laid on the plate 12 is moved towards the device 71 by rotation of the discs 57. The free end of the fabric is laid on the flap 18 and pulled beneath the rod 45 until its leading edge can be seized by the grippers 19. The carriage 15 is moved towards the roll 11 and runs up onto a movable strip 32 on one of the rails 14 to actuate a switch 23 to cause a pressure cylinder 33 to lift the flap 18 into the position of Fig 6 so that the edge 10b is clamped by the grippers 19. The carriage 15 is moved to the left of Fig 1 so that the required length of fabric is drawn off. When the carriage 15 leaves the strip 32, the switch 23 is released and the flap 18 pivots downwards to bear against the member 17. When a switch 22 on the carriage 15 abuts against a stop 31 adjusted to the required fabric length, the grippers 19 release the edge 10b and a motor 35 receives a pulse to act on a belt device 34 to displace the device 16, comprising a gear motor 16a having a rotary cutting disc 16b on its shaft, transversly across the fabric to cut the fabric in a T-section groove 17a, Fig 6, in the member 17. After cutting, the device 16 abuts a switch (24), Fig 2 (not shown), which returns it. The return of the motor 35 actuates a switch 25, Figs 1 and 2 (the latter not shown), which delivers a pulse to a pressure cylinder 38 to raise the member 17 so that the cut fabric edge 10a slides down the member 17. The device 16 is stopped at the end of its return movement by the abutment of a switch 26, Fig 6, thereon with a stop 26a with the member 17 raised. When a switch 27 is actuated by a stop 41 due to the raising of the member 17, the member 17 is lowered again and clamps the edge 10a against the fabric layers on the plate 12. The carriage 19 moves to the left of Fig 1 and the operation is repeated. The device 21 acts continuously during the operation.
