Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In an agitator having an agitator spindle 10 driven through gearing and inserted in use in a vessel, e.g. a high-pressure boiler, the gearing and the spindle seal are housed in a common housing 28 and the spindle is detachably connected in the region of the seal to the gearing output shaft 8 which carries the seal and parts of the gearing, the shaft and the seal and said parts being withdrawable as a unit axially of the housing 28 into a bearing column 23 mounted on the housing and provided with a window 41 for removal and replacement of the seal. The shaft 8 is secured to the spindle 10 by nuts 21 on a tie rod 9 screwed into the coned end 32 of the spindle. A bearing 12 for the shaft 8 is mounted in a sleeve 22 screwed into the column 23, and locked by a screw 29, a member 40 being secured to the sleeve. The top of the rod 9 has a hexagonal end 36 and is enclosed by a cover 26. A gearwheel 6, mounted in bearings 52, 53 and forming part of a gearing driven by an electric motor (1), Fig. 2 (not shown), has internal teeth 57 engaged by a toothed driving disc 7, preferably of synthetic plastics, secured to a flanged sleeve 54 non-rotatably mounted on the shaft 8. The seal comprises two stationary sealing rings 13 and two rotary carbon sealing rings 14 disposed between the rings 13 and in facial sealing contact therewith; the seal being retained by O-rings 59 in a slotted housing 15 secured to the shaft by a removable bolt (not shown). The top ring 13 is press-fitted in a bush 20 carrying a further bearing 11 for the shaft 8. The seal chamber 33 is filled with a barrier fluid, which may be nitrobenzene, or oil and is cooled by liquid preferably water, circulated through a coil 16. The agitator base 27, which is connected to a wall of a high pressure boiler (not shown), forms a labyrinth seal with the shaft 8 and any leakage is collected in a trap 17 and may be drained through a passage 60. To renew the seal, cover 26 is removed and rod 9 is unscrewed from the spindle 10 to detach shaft 8 from the spindle, abutment means (not shown) being provided to ensure that the latter can fall axially by a small amount only. Sleeve 22 is then screwed out of column 23 using the hexagonal end 25 of member 40, to thereby withdraw shaft 8, disc 7, bush 20 and sealing rings 13 and 14 upwardly. When the housing ring 15 is opposite the window 41 the removable bolt is disengaged from the shaft 8 and the sealing rings are removed by hand from the end of the shaft 8. To fit a new seal the procedure is reversed.
