Abstract

1385539 Power plant THERMO ELECTRON CORP 24 Oct 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 48900/72 Heading F1Q In a vapour power plant employing working fluid and lubricating fluid, a starting process comprises the steps of extracting a mixture of lubricant and working fluid from the plant, supplying the mixture to a pump 46 with a pressure head and operating the pump to circulate the mixture at an elevated pressure, heating the circulated mixture to a temperature where at least the working fluid is boiled and vapourized 6, thereafter separating the lubricant from the working fluid 15, retaining the vapourized working fluid in the plant and returning the separated lubricant to a point 28 in the plant normally isolated from the working fluid during operation. The expander 22 is illustrated as a reciprocating piston expander but a rotary piston or turbine type expander may be employed. In the latter cases the crank-case would be replaced by a lubricant sump. In the regenerator 50 residual heat contained in the expanded gas is used to pre-heat the working fluid passing though the coil 52. The pump 42 is operated by a D.C. motor 80 during the start up process to provide a supply of fluid at sufficient pressure to the boiler feed pump 46. During normal operation, the pump 42 is not operated and fluid entering though the line 40 into the pump 42 exits through the line 44 into the boiler feed pump 46. The working medium may be thiophene, pyridine, trifluoro-ethanol or water. Suitable lubricants are specified.
