Abstract

<PICT:0904757/III/1> A rotary disc contacting column primarily for the solvent extraction of liquids has fixed rings 11 attached to the inside of the container 10, and a stirrer 22 comprising a set of discs 12 attached to a shaft 13 rotated by a hydraulic motor 18 driven by an incoming jet 19 of one of the liquids. A proportion of the liquid may be by-passed at 20 and the speed of rotation of the stirrer adjusted by the valve 21. The apparatus is suitable for use with high perssures as the shaft does not have to pass through a seal. As shown the apparatus is applied to the propane de-asphalting of a lubricating oil faction, the oil mixed with a little propane entering at 14 and the remainder of the propane at 15. The deasphalted oil in solution in propane leaves at 16 and the asphalt at 17; a liquid level controller 23 controls the level of the oil/asphalt interface 26. The hydraulic motor 18 is a Pelton wheel the driving jet 19 of which is directed between shields 31, (see also Fig. 2, (not shown)). Alternatively the motor may be an axial flow turbine.
