Abstract

1,260,583. Isostatic pressing. G.K.N. GROUP SERVICES Ltd. 8 Jan., 1970 [9 Jan., 1969], No. 1284/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C7] Metal powder is isostatically compressed in a flexible mould containing a mandrel, at least part of which is slidable relative to the mould in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the mandrel. The apparatus shown comprises a flexible mould 10 made of natural or synthetic rubber or synthetic plastics closed at one end by a closure member 12 with a peripheral groove 13 in which a rib 14 on the mould engages. A metal end cap 15 and rubber buffer 16 are provided at the closed end of the mould and an annular rubber buffer 17 adjacent the closure member 12. A cover plate 19 is provided for sealing the mould and passages 18 are provided for filling the mould with powder. Mandrel 23 is slidably mounted in cylindrical recess 22 in the closure member 12 and a second part of the mandrel 25 is slidably mounted in the first part 23. Bolts 27, 29 prevent the ports of the mandrel becoming disengaged from each other and from the closure member and coil springs 24 and 31 bias the mandrels to the positions shown. In operation metal powder of -100 mesh (B.S.I.) is fed into the mould cavity through passage 18 and is vibrated to ensure even filling of the mould. Cover plate 19 is bolted in position and the mould assembly is immersed in liquid which is then subjected to a pressure of 25,000 p.s.i. The mould is squeezed inwards compressing the powder and sliding of powder relative to the mandrel is minimized by telescoping of the mandrel. The pressure is then released and the green compact is extracted from the mould by removing the cover plate 19 and end closure member 12. The green compact may then be subjected to a suitable pressure and temperature to forge and sinter it.
