Abstract
1,224,700. Compression moulding powders under reduced pressure. SHIONOGI & CO. Ltd. 18 Nov., 1969 [18 Nov., 1968], No. 56509/69. Heading B5A. In a rotary table compression moulding machine wherein powder is compressed in a die between upper and lower opposing punches, the powder is subjected to reduced air pressure before and during the compression. The punches are carried by a rotational structure 1 rotating on a stationary frame. The upper punch 6 is located in guide sleeve 2 which in turn is located in a receptacle 11. The lower end 21 of guide sleeve 2 carries a flexible rubber boot 7 which contacts a matrix 3 having a die cavity when the sleeve 2 is lowered. Holes 24 in sleeve 2 connect the upper punch 6 with cavity 17 in receptacle 11, and thence to pipe-line 14. The lower punch is mounted in slide guide portion 13 and passes through recess 8 which is connected to pipelines 15 and 16. The air pressure around the punches and in the die cavity is controlled by pressureregulating means 5 and 9 which are fixedly mounted on the stationary frame and connected to a source of reduced air pressure. The pressing cycle commences with the upper punch 6 and guide sleeve 2 raised and a flow of air through recess 8 removing any powder remaining from the previous process, this flow continuing while the lower punch 4 is lowered and the cavity filled. The air flow is then stopped, lower punch 4 is raised slightly and the surplus powder scraped away. The lower punch is again lowered and the pressure inside chamber 8 is reduced by extraction of air through lines 15 and 16. Sleeve 2 is lowered into contact with matrix 3, air inside the sleeve is removed through pipeline 14 and the upper punch is forced downwards to compress the powder. After compressing, both air chambers are opened to the atmosphere, the upper punch is raised and the tablet formed is raised on the lower punch and then swept away by a deflector. The reduced air pressure is preferably less than 200 mm. Hg absolute and the spaces between the moving parts are sealed by 0-rings 40. The punches and guide sleeve are operated by conventional guide rails (not shown).
