Abstract

126,025. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. Oct. 28, 1916. Ordnance design; breech mechanism.- Relates to guns in which the recoil is eliminated by the rearward discharge of a compensating mass, and in which the gun is opened for loading by operating a handlever E which acts upon a movable portion B of the barrel to (1) rotate it with respect to a fixed portion A to disengage interrupted threads, (2) move it longitudinally, and (3) swing it aside about a shaft B<1> parallel to the barrel. According to the invention, the three movements are effected by continuous movement of the hand-lever E in one direction. In the form shown, this movement is converted by bevel gearing to a sleeve C rotating on the shaft B<1> and carrying an arm provided with a horizontal roller C<2> which engages with a cam groove b<2> in a member B<2> attached to the barrel portion B to rotate this portion to unlock it from the fixed barrel portion A. The sleeve also carries a second arm provided with a radial roller C<1> which first engages a cam groove b<1> in the member B<2> to move the barrel portion B rearwardly in guides b until arrested by a collar b<3>, rotation of the barrel being prevented by a key B<x> engaging a slot in the collar b, and then moves the barrel portion B laterally on to a support D<xx> as shown in Fig. 4. The barrel portion B during its swinging movement operates a cartridge extractor F, and a spring-controlled catch b<x> on moving away from a stop face d<1x> engages with a recess b<1x> in the key B<x> to lock the portion B against longitudinal movement. The handle E, Fig. 5, has a spring-controlled lever-catch e which is disengaged from a recess d<1> by pushing a sleeve E<1> inwards, but during the rotation of the handle a. screwed sleeve E<2> feathered to the handle boss retains the lever e out of engagement with the notch. The gun is provided with firing mechauism as described in Specification 126,026.
