Abstract

1,260,258. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 28 Oct., 1970 [19 Nov., 1969], No. 51105/70. Heading B6F. A typewriter platen 15 may be driven incrementally or continuously under control of keys 16-19 by a motor 20. Keys 16, 17 operate contacts 66, 62 respectively to cause incremental drive in forward or reverse direction. Key 16, through contacts 66, energizes an electromagnet 65 which withdraws a probe 83 from a slot 82 in a positioning disc 81 normally driven by the motor 20, the probe further closing contacts 60 to close the motor circuit. The electromagnet 65 is coupled to the probe 83 by a pawl 86 which releases the probe soon after the probe has been disengaged from the slot 82, so that after a half revolution of the disc 81 the probe 83 re-enters a slot 82 so opening contacts 60 and stopping the motor. A shield 90, pivotable against springs 95 by engagement with the probe 83, prevents the probe from reentering the slot 82 immediately. Key 17 acts similarly but additionally causes reversal of the motor. Keys 18, 19 cause fast and slow continuous drive of the platen 15 respectively, each key being displaceable in two directions for forward and reverse rotation of the platen. Each key operates two pairs of contacts whichever direction it is displaced, one pair determining the speed of the drive to the platen and the other acting to disengage a clutch 64 to render the disc 81 inoperative, to disengage a detent pawl 42 from its wheel 41, and to close the motor supply circuit.
