Abstract

1436516 Typewriters &c INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Sept 1974 [23 Nov 1973] 40333/74 Heading B6F A single element typewriter having an escapement rack 17 has a control 20 for rotating the rack so that tooth 16 on type carriage 14 can engage one or other of the series of teeth 18, 19 and control 58 for causing a half backspace regardless of which series is in use. Movement of control handle 58 rocks member 50 so that ridge 51 rides up ramp 47. Member 50 thus moves leftwards (as viewed in Fig. 2) and so moves arbor 24 attached to the rack 17. Movement of the rack 17 is limited by stop 40 reaching abutment 35. Depending on which rack is in use end face 42 or 43 contacts abutment 35. The spacing of the abutment 35 and the faces 42, 43 equals half the pitch of the teeth of associated rack 18, 19.
