Abstract

1,259,308. Abrasive tools. F. L. & J. C. CODMAN CO. 31 Jan., 1969, No. 5469/69. Heading B3D. A method of making a resilient abrasive member for a grinding, polishing, or finishing tool comprises forming and temporarily enlarging holes in a cellular foam material or temporarily enlarging existing holes therein, employing a mechanical hole-enlarging action, urging abrasive grains into the enlarged holes and below the surface of the material, and bonding the grains in place. A sheet 12 of open cell polyurethane foam material is fed from a roll 24 past a hopper 27 which feeds abrasive grains 14 on to the sheet 12, the coated sheet being then stretched by bending it around a roller 28 to enlarge its cells for receiving the abrasive grains inserted by a spiked roller 30. A sprayer 37 applies a liquid bonding agent to the sheet 12, whilst it is again bent over a roller 36, so that the bonding agent penetrates the cells containing the abrasive grains. The foam material and bonding agent are subsequently cured in an oven 40.
