Abstract

1,258,430. Electro-mechanical transducers. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. Jan.23, 1969 [Jan.23, 1968], No.3848/69. Heading GIN. In an electro-mechanical transducer, magnetic flux of at least one magnet 11 is conducted by a yoke 12 across at least one air-gap 14 and at least one magnetic-field dependent semi-conductor element 13, e.g. a magnetoresistive element or a Hall generator, the electrical output of the element 13 varying in dependence upon the position of a regulating element 15, within the air-gap, as determined by the position of a component to be monitored. A desired functional dependence between change of position of the component and the output of element 13 is obtained by suitable selection of the movement and/or the shape of the member 15. Opposing faces of the air-gap and of the member 15 must be the same shape. As shown, the pressure in the inlet manifold of an I.C. engine is used to control the ignition timing of the engine via pressure box 17, the shape of the member 15 being as shown. Alternatively, fuel injection of the I.C. engine may be controlled by this apparatus. In Fig. 2 (not shown) fuel injection is controlled by the position of a butterfly valve in the intake manifold as adjusted by a foot pedal. Ignition timing may be controlled by the position of the butterfly valve. Alternatively, the ignition timing and fuel injection may be controlled by the engine speed via a centrifugal governor rotated with the crank-shaft operating on the member 15 of the transducer of Fig.1 or 2 (not shown). In Fig.3 (not shown), variations in the position of the rear axle relative to the vehicle body due to loading are used to alter the position of the vehicle headlights to maintain them at a constant position relative to the road. The transducers of Fig. and Fig .2 (not shown) may be used instead of the transducer of Fig.3 (not shown). Any of the transducers may be used to indicate the quantity of fuel in the tank or in an automatic gear-box. A plurality of air-gaps each having a corresponding member 15 may be provided for controlling or measuring a number of variable parameters. Further, a number of semi-conductor elements 13 may be provided for various measuring, control and regulating operations which are different from each other.
