[Also in Divisions B2 and C1] Resin-coated sheets of carbon fibre are produced by continuously feeding a plurality of sheets or tapes of fibres of polyacrylonitrile or copolymer thereof, comprising at least 10<SP>5</SP> fibres, through a furnace or furnaces wherein the majority of constituents other than carbon are driven off and subjecting the resulting sheets of carbon fibre to a resin-impregnation step. This is carried out by feeding the tapes into a resin impregnation unit where they are contacted with a resin-coated release paper on both sides and then passing the sandwiched tapes between heated rollers, the heat and pressure causing the resin to transfer from the release paper to the fibre tapes, thus impregnating them with resin. The coated tapes may then be cut tranversely to form sheets. The release paper is preferably itself impregnated with a release agent which affords the resin no permanent adhesion to the paper.
