Abstract

1,256,716. Non-woven fabric laminates. KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP. 29 Oct., 1968, No. 51297/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A non-woven fabric is made by drafting sideby-side fibres to produce a web having 80-95% of the. fibres extended to substantially their full length and aligned longitudinally, printing an open. pattern of adhesive on to the release agent coated surface of a carrier sheet 17, applying the coated surface to the web whilst maintaining the web under tension and pressing them together to embed the fibres in the adhesive, setting the adhesive and stripping the pattern bonded web from. the sheet. The non-woven fabric produced may comprise a web of drafted aligned fibres bonded by an open pattern of adhesive which occupies not more than 25% of the total fabric area, the spacing in the open pattern being less than the average length of the fibres, which is ¢ to 3 inches with the majority of the fibres being at least 1 inch in length and 80-95% of the fibres being aligned in one direction. The fabric has a weight of 3-20 g./yards. The sheet and web can be pressed together by heated roll 20 which fuses the adhesive and calendered by roll 28. The adhesive is printed on to sheet 17 by intaglio roll 23 and doctor blade 27. The sheet 17 may be an endless belt (Fig. 2). In the latter case, the web can be cooled prior to stripping from sheet 17 and can be returned to the heated roll 17 for calendering. The sheet 17 can consist of silicone, polytetrafluoroethylene, fatty acid metal complexes or acrylic polymers coated on to paper, films, metal sheets or glass fabric. The fibres can be made of cotton, viscose or acetate rayon, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitriles or polyolefins. The adhesive may be a plastisol of vinyl resins in organic esters. The fabric can be cross-laid or plied and hotcalendered to produce a laminate.
