Abstract

1,124,379. Laminates. CELANESE CORP., and HICKS & OTIS PRINTS Inc. 7 July, 1966 [12 July, 1965 (2)], No. 30569/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] An ornamental textile material is produced by firmly securing together two woven textile fabrics 10, 20 heat-shrinkable to different extents by an adhesive 15 supplied in a predetermined pattern to leave areas of the contacting faces of the fabrics free from adhesive and cured to insolubility, and heating the composite product to effect differential shrinkage of the fabrics. In one embodiment, Figs. 1A and 1B, the face fabric 10, e.g. a fabric previously heatshrunk, passes from a supply roll 11 between driven rolls 13, 14, the roll 13 being an intaglio roll having grooves 17 and fed with adhesive 15 using a doctor blade 16. The adhesive 15 may be colourless, of the same colour as the fabric 10 or of a contrasting colour and is preferably a polyurethane-type adhesive. The roll 14 may be of rubber, metal or metal coated with rubber. The backing fabric 20, e.g. a ninon fabric, is guided by a roll 19 to contact the fabric 10 as it passes on to a smooth surface steel or aluminium roll 18 heated internally by steam or electrical elements to evaporate the solvent in the adhesive. The temperature of the drum 18 must be kept below that at which shrinkage of the fabric 20 occurs. The composite product 22 passes around a roll 26 on to a roll 24 and is fed to a wind-up roll 23 on which it is stored at room temperature for 24 hours to allow the polyurethane adhesive to cure. The rolls 19, 24 are preferably provided with a release coating, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene or a silicon compound. The product 22 is fed on to a smooth surface aluminium or steel roll 25, Fig. 13, heated internally electrically or by steam to cause substantial shrinkage of the fabric 20 to form puckered areas 27. The product is wound on a roll 29 rotated at a slower speed than that of the roll 26. Automatic tension control apparatus may be used. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a latex adhesive is used and the composite product is heated by passing around a heated roll just after application of the adhesive. The puckered areas 27 may be calendered or ironed either as part of the puckering process or separately. Specified fabrics are those made of silk, cotton, polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, vinylidene chloride polymers and copolymers with vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride, polyolefines, e.g. polyethylene and polypropylene, cellulose esters, e.g. cellulose acetate, and regenerated cellulose. The face fabric and the backing fabric may be of the same fibres, the face fabric having been pre-shrunk. A heat-shrinkable fabric may be sandwiched between two substantially non-shrinkable woven fabrics. In another modification, the face fabric may contain yarns which heat-shrink in one direction whereas the backing fabric contains yarns which heat-shrink in a different direction.
