Abstract
1,256,975. Clamps. A. FRAUZ and A. PLANCK [trading as FOUQUET WERK FRAUZ & PLANCK]. 21 Feb., 1969 [22 Feb., 1968; 30 Dec., 1968], No. 9600/69. Heading E2B. A clamping device comprises at least one clamping element which has an annular ring made from a resilient material and which is substantially Z-shaped (as hereinbefore defined) or substantially Y-shaped (as hereinbefore defined) in radical section so that the element has radially inner and radially outer peripheral surfaces of substantially cylindrical form, and means for applying pressure to the clamping element so that the inner and outer peripheral surfaces thereof can be displaced radially to exert clamping pressure for clamping an inner cylindrical member to a surrounding member (a sleeve as shown). A device using substantially Z-shaped elements is shown in Fig. 1 and the pressure applying means consist of two rigid plates disposed above and below the elements and nuts and bolts 5, 6 which pass through the plates and through the elements 1. The elements are distorted by the clamping pressure of the bolts and nuts in 15 engagement with the cylindrical member 2 and the sleeve 4. The surfaces of the flanges of each element which extend in opposite directions from the ring are inclined as shown in Fig. 3. The substantially Y-shaped form of clamping element is shown in Figs. 2 and 4 and the pressure applying means consist of a flange on the cylindrical member 2 to be engaged by. the elements and a rigid ring 9, clamping pressure being applied by a nut on a threaded portion of the cylindrical member 2. A third device which uses. two elements of the substantially Z-shaped form disposed one inside the other, is shown in Fig. 9, the pressure applying means are two annular plates and clamping pressure is applied by bolts which screw into one of the plates; the clamping pressure distorts the elements and urges the inner and outermost flanges inwardly and outwardly respectively into gripping engagement with the cylindrical member 103 and the sleeve 105 respectively, the two adjacent flanges abutting each other to cause this to happen. The substantially Y- shaped form of element can be divided by radial slots which pass across the ring except through its central rib.
