Abstract

1,256,551. Vacuum furnaces. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 22 Sept., 1969 [23 Sept., 1968], No. 46499/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Divisions H3-H5] In a cored vacuum furnace having a shell 1 mounted for tilting about a horizontal axis 6 extending between upstanding pillars 7, 71 which are carried by a base-plate 9 rotatable about a vertical axis on a tray 11, the inductor 2 is connected to supply lines 23, 23<SP>1</SP> by electric conductors 20, 20<SP>1</SP> through the intermediary of two sets of contact plates 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, and cooperating spring clip connectors 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, either the two sets of contact plates 19, 19<SP>1</SP> being fixed and the clip connectors 24, 24<SP>1</SP> being mounted on the rotatable base-plate 9 or vice versa. As shown, the sets of plates 19, 19<SP>1</SP> are mounted on respective conductive rings 21, 21<SP>1</SP> secured to the base-plate 9 by spaced insulators 22, 22<SP>1</SP>. The conductors 20, 20<SP>1</SP> are secured to the rings 21 21<SP>1</SP> which may have different radii and extend in the same or different planes. The spring clip connectors comprise two cranked arms pivoted together intermediate their ends, with the contact making ends biased together by a compression spring between the other ends. The rings 21, 21<SP>1</SP> can be omitted if the contact plates 19, 19<SP>1</SP> are secured together to form a ring or part of a ring. The conductors 23, 23<SP>1</SP> and rings 21, 21<SP>1</SP> are water cooled. This arrangement permits the furnace supply to be continued in several angular positions of the baseplate 9. The furnace is used for vacuum degassing or superheating molten metal. Charging the furnace can be effected through a vacuumtight door 15 or through vacuum column 4 by swinging the vacuum pipe 17 away from the furnace. The melt can be teemed in various angular positions of the furnace by tilting the furnace so that a beak 12 overlies a teeming station, inserting a metering tube 13 in the beak and disconnecting vacuum pipe 17. The beak may be flanged so that it may make sealing engagement with a similar flange on a gastight container containing a mould or ladle. A shut-off device may be included in the container so that it can be evacuated before being secured to beak 12.
