Abstract

1,142,234. Glass to metal seals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 7 Dec., 1967 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3630/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H1] In a batch process for the manufacture of sealed magnetic reed contact units the reeds 6 are initially secured parallel to one another in mounting blocks 7, 11 by low melting point solder 9; the blocks 7, 11 are then mounted in locating blocks 12, 13 so that the reed ends overlap inside glass tubes 14; the entire assembling apparatus is evacuated and filled with inert gas; a magnetic field is applied to close the reed contacts; hot water is passed through cooling channels in either the upper or lower locating block 12, 13 to melt the solder and allow the upper or lower reeds to move until they are parallel with and flat against the surfaces of the co-operating rigidly held reeds; cooling water is passed through the cooling channels to resolidify the solder; the magnetic field is removed; one of the reed locating blocks 12, 13, is moved laterally to set the reed spacing; and finally the ends of the glass tubes are sealed to the reeds by electric heaters 19.
