In a centrifuge for separating non-homogeneous liquid mixtures a ring-shaped acoustic radiator serving to increase the efficiency of separation is mounted on the peripheral wall of the rotor of the centrifuge or of a cup inserted in the rotor. In Fig. 1, an acoustic radiator 5 is mounted on the inner surface of the wall of a rotor 1 which is replaceably secured to a shaft 2 mounted in a ball bearing support 3 and driven through a pulley 4. The radiator, which may be of the piezoceramic or magnetostrictive type, is insulated from the wall of the rotor by plastics straps 6 and is connected by wires extending through a tube 8 to a terminal device 7 in turn connected to a high-frequency oscillator (not shown). Water is fed through the tube 8 for cooling the radiator 5 and is withdrawn through a hole in the rotor into a receiving chamber 9 in a protective casing 10. The liquid mixture to be separated is introduced into the rotor through a pipe 2. The high-frequency energy is converted by the acoustic radiator into ultra-sonic oscillations which causes coagulation of certain constituents of the mixture thereby facilitating its separation into light and heavy fractions under the action of centrifugal force due to rotation of the rotor. The light fraction passes through the whole rotor and into a receiver 18 while the heavy fraction is removed from the rotor by means of known unloading devices. The centrifuge may be used for separating suspensions of finely dispersed polymer particles in water or for classifying electrocorundum particles in suspension in a liquid. In Fig. 2, cups 14 to be filled with the liquid mixture to be separated are inserted in sockets in a centrifuge rotor 13. Acoustic radiators 15 are mounted on the walls of the cups. Highfrequency energy is supplied to the radiators via a terminal device 16 and contacts 17.
