Abstract
1,255,091. Piezoelectric elements. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 6 Jan., 1969, No. 743/69. Heading H1E. [Also in Divisions C1 and G1] Apparatus for measuring moisture content comprises a piezo-electric crystal coated with a deliquescent salt. The crystal forms the frequency determining circuit of an oscillator, Fig. 1 (not shown), so that the frequency is determined in accordance with ambient relative humidity. In use a test oscillator is beat with a reference and the difference frequency component integrated and indicated. The salt is lithium or calcium chloride or lithium bromide and is of thickness 70-200 Angstroms. Fig. 2 gives results for three detectors, #F 0 is the frequency change due to the dry coating, #F is the further change due to moisture absorption, the natural resonant frequency of the crystal being about 9 MHz.
