Abstract

125,429. Sueter, M. F. July 18, 1916. Aerostats. - An automatic gas valve for air-ships, balloons, &c. comprises a light ring 1 carrying a disk of fabric and normally held by a spring 4 against a conical fabric surface 14 carried by a frame clamped to the envelope. Fig. 2 shows a ring 1 of aluminium stiffened by two channels 3, which may be of duralumin, to which the adjusting-screw 5 of the spring 4 is connected. The valve frame consists of two rings 6, 7 of aluminium joined together by beaded edges, the ring 7 having annular grooves 8 around which is clamped a rubber band 9 and sleeve 10 to form a gas-tight joint with the envelope. A ring 13 of aluminium &c. is secured to two channel members 11, 12 of duralurnin &c. carried by the valve frame, and the space between the ring 13 and the frame is closed by the fabric 14. The ring 1 may be centralized by cords which are just slack when the valve is closed. A light guard of fluted duralumin strips 15 covered with fabric and open to wards the rear of the airship is provided above the valve.
