Abstract

1,254,243. Treating wool. J. P. STEVENS & CO. Inc. 7 Nov., 1969 [8 Nov., 1968], No. 54629/69. Heading DIP. [Also in Division C3] Woollen fabrics are treated to improve their dimensional stability by applying a compound of the general formula where J is a di- or tri-valent aliphatic radical having a molecular weight of 14 to 5,500, R is H or C 1-5 alkyl, Q is a divalent aromatic or alkyl-subst. aromatic group of 6-18 carbon atoms, A is epoxyalkoxy, or Az, -NHCaH 2a Az or -OCaH 2a Az where Az is an aziridinyl radical which may be alkyl-substituted and a is 1 to 4, and m is 2 or 3. The compound is applied from a liquid medium and insolubilised, e.g. by heating. The radical J may be -(CH 2 ) x -, -(CaH 2a O) x Ca H 2a -, where x is 1 to 100 and a is 1 to 4, (CH 2 CH=CHCH 2 ) u - derived from polybutadiene, u being about 6 to 100, -CaH 2a (OCaH 2a ) x - O-L-O (CaH 2a O) v CaH 2a - where L is alkylene, which may be interrupted by O, S or NR, or is divalent alicyclic radical, and x and y are independently 1 to 100. As a trivalent radical J can be, for example, oxyalkylated glycerine radicals. The compounds are preferably used in combination with a coreactant, e.g. a polybasic acid or polyamine, which may be added together with the aziridinyl compound or in a separate step. Other functional finishes may also be present, e.g. acrylics and their salts and fluorocarbons. The wool may be in the form of a fibre, yarn or fabric and may be blended with other natural or synthetic fibres. Application may be from a solution, e.g. in dichloromethane diluted with dimethyl formamide, or emulsion. After insolubilising, the textile is preferably washed.
