Abstract

1,253,616. Heat-treating aluminium alloys. ZENTRUM FœR ELEKTRONENMIKROSKOPIE . March 17, 1969 [March 15, 1968], No.13918/69. Heading C7A. Alloys of the aluminium-magnesium-silicon type are homogenized at 530‹ -580‹ C. and are then cooled at a constant temperature gradient of at least 50‹C. per hour, but without quenching, so that a fine precipitate coherent with the matrix is formed, to a temperature in the range 230‹ - 270‹C., at which they are held for a period up to 24 hours; the alloy may then be heated to the required working temperature or allowed to cool. In a modification of the process the alloy is cooled to room temperature at the above rate after homogenization and then reheated to 230‹-270‹C. The process is particularly applied to alloys containing 0.4-0.9% or 0.6-1.4% Mg, 0.3-0.7% or 0.6-1.6% Si, Fe not more than 0.5%, Mn not more than 1%, chromium not more than 0.5%, balance aluminium.
