Abstract

1,253,518. Photographic silver salt diffusion transfer processes and materials. AGFAGEVAERT. Feb. 18, 1969 [March 1, 1968], No. 10197/68. Heading G2C. A silver salt diffusion transfer process comprises imagewise exposing an integral material consisting of a support, an image-receiving layer, a silver halide emulsion layer and optionally an interlayer between the silver halide emulsion layer and receiving layer; the emulsion and/or the optional interlayer containing a macromolecular compound containing free hydroxy groups and developing with an alkaline processing solution in the presence of a silver halide solvent, a substance for converting the complex silver halide into a visible image and a compound providing borate ions and then rinsing in an aqueous bath to remove the emulsion layer without mechanical help. The invention also relates to integral materials as set out above which contain in one of the above-mentioned layers and/or in the support or in a water-permeable layer the compound providing borate ions. In the examples, a paper support, or a polyester support which has been subbed on both sides is coated with an imagereceiving layer containing gelatine, hardener, silver sulphide and optionally sodium alginate and borax, a hydroxyethyl starch interlayer which may contain boric acid (this layer may be omitted) and a silver halide-gelatino emulsion layer which may also contain polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl starch or gum arabic and boric acid. The processing solution generally contains developer, silver halide solvent and borax or boric acid. The image-receiving layer may contain inorganic pigment particles such as barium sulphate, china clay or silica, and a hydrophilic layer also containing such particles may be applied to the back of the support. Specified macromolecular compounds are gum arabic, mannans, galactomannans, alginates, monoglyceryl esters of pectic acid, hydroxyalkyl starches, hydroxyalkyl celluloses and polyvinyl alcohol.
