Abstract
1,252,018. Making musical instruments; drawing. NIPPON GAKKI SEIZO K.K. 20 Jan., 1969 [8 Feb., 1968; 15 May, 1968 (2)], No. 3171/69. Headings B3A, B3P and B3Q. A method of making tapered metal tubes 14, Fig. 1, e.g. for wind musical instruments, comprises placing a tubular blank on a tapered mandrel 1 and moving the mandrel relatively to a plate-die 8 to form the blank about the mandrel, the material and physical proportions of the die being such that it yields as the blank is formed. The tube may be of silver or an alloy of copper and zinc, and the die of soft iron, brass, aluminium, aluminium alloy, lead or polyurethane. Tubes of circular, polygonal or elliptical cross-section may be formed. As shown, the die is stationary and the mandrel is pulled through by a plate 6 to which it is connected by a coupling 5 or (23), Fig. 5 (not shown). The plate is traversed by a screw 19, Fig. 6, moved by a nut 20 which is driven, through a chain and sprockets 22, by a motor 21. The drawing orifice 9 may be chamfered; after use deformed dies, Fig. 2B (not shown), are discarded but resilient polyurethane dies may be used repeatedly. The tube may be drawn in stages, using a different die and mandrel for each stage, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). Two dies may be used for the last stage, each forming only a part of the length of the tube. Curved tubes may be formed on a curved mandrel 1, Fig. 7, with the die 8 mounted in ball or roller bearings 27 or in a universal bearing, Fig. 10 (not shown), in a stationary plate. The mandrel 1 may be attached to the moving plate by a yoke 36, Fig. 8, engaging a groove 34 in the mandrel to prevent its withdrawal from a slot 32. In another form, Fig. 11, the tube 14 is pushed through the die 8 and a stripper is provided comprising a pair of plates on a pivot 41 and closed about the mandrel by springs 40.
