Abstract
1,251,469. Continuous casting. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. 30 Sept., 1970 [8 Oct., 1969], No. 46546/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F4] A tundish 10 has base apertures 41 over moulds 11 each with a dummy bar 13 supported on a platform 14 lowerable into a pit 15 (filled with water to a level 38); a water-box 12 surrounds all the moulds 11 and their individual cooling jackets 26 which the water enters through upper slots 34 to flow out through openings 35 at the mould bases e.g. to spray the emerging Al or Al alloy castings. The tundish melt level is automatically maintained. The moulds 11 may be of round, rectangular, polygonal, T or I section. The tundish 10 (lined with refractory material 19) has a common Al wall 18 with the waterbox 12 and the steel sheet remainder 16, 17 of the tundish is attached by screws 29. The collared upper ends of the moulds 11 fit in the apertures 41 in the wall 18 and the lower ends fit into apertures in the bottom plate 24 of the water-box 12 with rubber sealing rings 32, 33. The moulds are retained by screws 36 and bars 37. The moulds 11 shown (of Albased Mg-Si alloy) each have a graphite lining 39, topped by a "Marinite" (Registered Trade Mark) ring 40 but instead of the latter there may be an insulating layer on the exterior of the mould mouth. For casting smaller billets, a mould (42) with wider top and bottom flanges are inserted in the apparatus with adjustment of the tundish lining 19 and a top ring 46 extending into the aperture of that lining. In modifications, the graphite lining 39 is omitted and in one of these an Al mould has an annular gap (58) providing an oil inlet to the cavity. In others, without top rings, the moulds are all graphite or have graphite inserts (48, 55) in Al, Al alloy or steel moulds with intervening insulation.
