Abstract

1,251,275. Cooling power generating plants. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION (HOLDINGS) Ltd. 25 Aug., 1970 [3 Sept., 1969], No. 43539/69. Headings F4H and F4U. A cooling system for a power generating plant which includes a steam-driven turbine 1 having a steam exhaust path, including a first closed coolant circulation path 7 a portion of which is in heat exchange relationship via a condenser 6 with the steam exhaust path to remove heat from the latter path, and refrigeration apparatus operable to circulate refrigerant around a path 8 in which the refrigerant is successively compressed at 12, cooled at 13 and expanded at 14, the refrigerant path being thermally coupled to the first coolant path by an evaporator 10 to remove heat from the latter path downstream of the heat exchange portion 6. The coolant in the first coolant path may be water. The refrigerant in the refrigeration path may be dichlorodifluoromethane. In operation, the temperature of the steam leaving the steam generating equipment is 79‹ F. and this is reduced to 75‹ F. by the cooling effect of the first coolant path.
