Abstract
1333052 Refrigerating PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 23 Oct 1970 [28 Oct 1969] 50502/70 Heading F4H Apparatus for producing cold at a temperature below the lambda transition point of He<SP>4</SP> comprises a Joule-Kelvin system having a compressor 1 which passes high pressure helium through a series of pre-coolers 4, 6, 7 and countercurrent heat exchangers 5 to a throttle device 9 formed by an ejector, one portion of the expanded helium recycling back to the suction side of the compressor via the heat exchangers 5 and the other passing via a further heat exchanger 13 and expansion valve 15 to a heat exchanger 18 in thermal contact with helium in a container 16 at a low pressure which communicates with the suction side of the ejector 9. A superleak 19 is connected to the heat exchanger 18 to remove superfluid and to a cooling region 20 which in turn is connected to the container 16 through a turbulence duct 21. Since no thermal energy is transported by the superfluid helium through the superleak to the region 20, the portion of normal helium created from the superfluid on heat extraction into the region 20, is removed together with the superfluid through the turbulence duct 21, thus removing thermal energy from the region 20 and maintaining temperatures therein of approximately 1‹ K. A further superleak 23 formed by ceramic portion 24 of a tube transfers superfluid He to an apparatus 27 which is to be cooled, e.g. electric components, infra-red cells or resonant cavities.
