Abstract
1,251,203. Surgical dressings. SCHOLL MFG. CO. Ltd. 11 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 7498/68. Heading A5R. A surgical dressing comprises at least two layers of cushioning material 1, 2, each layer having a serrated edge, the serrations of each layer being staggered with respect to the indentations of the other layer or layers and the resulting edge projections of each layer, except the layer 2 in contact with the user's skin, having their extremities extending outwards beyond the extremities of the projections of the layer 2 by a distance at least equal to the thickness of the layer 2. The surfaces of the layers facing the user's skin have an adhesive coating, preferably a pressure sensitive adhesive coating, at least on the marginal portions including the projections. At least layer 2 may have an afflictionreceiving opening. The layers are generally elliptical with two flat-sides, but may alternatively be generally round, pear or diamond shaped. As illustrated there are only two layers. The extremities of the projections are pointed but may alternatively be convex. The projections are equally spaced around the edges of the layers, the points of the extremities on the curved ends of both layers lying on radial lines from centres (4, 5), Figure 2 (not shown), and the serrations along the flat sides lying symmetrically about parallel lines (7) normal to the line (8) joining the centres (4, 5), Figure 2. The projections of the layer 1 lie symmetrically between those of the layer 2. The roots (9), Figure 2 (not shown) of the serrations of both layers all lie on a line (10), Figure 2 (not shown), and the extremities of the projections of layer 1 all lie on a line 11 and those of layer 2 on a line 12. The exposed surface of the layer 2 may, in storage, have a removable protective sheet or coating. The layers may be of the same or different material with the same or different thickness. One or more of the layers may be of one or more laminations secured together by adhesives or by a chemical union, and the layers may be secured together by a chemical union. Layer 1 may be of moleskin and layer 2 of a foamed material for example foamed rubber or polyurethane. The extremities of the projections of layer 1 may alternatively extend beyond the line (11) by a distance which may be the same for all projections or vary for different projections or groups of projections. The pad may be used as a corn, callous or bunion pad.
